What Are the Official Basketball Hoop & Backboard Dimensions?

The basketball rim sits at exactly 3.05 metres (10 feet) above the floor — a measurement that has remained unchanged since Dr. James Naismith nailed the original peach basket to a gymnasium balcony railing at that height in 1891. Both the NBA and FIBA use this identical rim height for all levels of professional and international competition. The rim itself has an inner diameter of 45cm (18 inches) — almost exactly twice the diameter of a standard basketball (24.1cm / 9.4 inches), giving players a surprisingly generous margin on direct shots.

The backboard is a rectangular panel measuring 1.83m wide × 1.07m tall (6 feet × 3.5 feet), mounted so its lower edge is 2.90m above the floor. At the centre of the backboard, a painted inner rectangle measuring 59cm × 45cm (24 inches × 18 inches) serves as the targeting box for bank shots — a precise aiming reference used by players when shooting off the glass. The backboard extends 1.20m beyond the baseline (the overhang), positioning the rim 1.575m from the baseline inside the court.

The rim itself consists of a steel ring 45cm in diameter attached to the backboard via a mounting bracket, with an optional breakaway spring mechanism (mandatory in NBA and FIBA) that allows the rim to flex downward during dunks and return to horizontal position, reducing stress on the backboard mounting. A net 40–45cm long hangs from the rim, slowing the ball after it passes through to make scoring visually clear. The rim and net specifications are identical under both NBA and FIBA regulations.

How to Read This Diagram

1
Unit: Toggle between metric (metres) and imperial (feet/inches) — both NBA and FIBA use the same dimensions, only the unit display changes.
2
Rim height: The critical 3.05m (10 ft) measurement shown from floor to top of the rim — universal across all professional basketball.
3
Inner rectangle: The orange targeting box on the backboard (59cm × 45cm) — the aiming reference for bank shots.

Rim vs Ball — The Numbers

  • Rim inner diameter: 45cm (18 in) — room for nearly 2 balls side by side
  • Basketball diameter: 24.1cm (9.5 in) — less than half the rim opening
  • Inner rectangle: 59cm × 45cm — bank-shot targeting box, bottom-aligned
  • Backboard lower edge: 2.90m above floor (NBA & FIBA identical)
  • Breakaway rim flex: Mandatory at NBA/FIBA level — flexes down on dunks
