The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was established in 1996–97 to honour the historic rivalry between India and Australia. It was named jointly after Allan Border — Australia's most-capped Test captain — and Sunil Gavaskar, India's legendary opener who became the first batsman to score 10,000 Test runs.
