What are the Official Football Field Dimensions?
Football pitch dimensions are governed by FIFA's Laws of the Game (Law 1) and allow for a defined range rather than a single fixed size. For senior international matches, FIFA specifies a length of 100โ110 metres and a width of 64โ75 metres. For domestic club matches, the allowable range is broader: 90โ120 metres in length and 45โ90 metres in width. The standard "template" pitch used at top-level professional venues is 105m ร 68m โ the size used for Champions League and major international tournaments.
The pitch is marked with several critical zones. The penalty area (also called the 18-yard box) extends 16.5 metres from each goal line and 40.32 metres wide. Inside it sits the goal area (6-yard box) โ 5.5 metres deep and 18.32 metres wide. The penalty spot is 11 metres from the goal line. The centre circle has a radius of 9.15 metres. All markings must be clearly visible and no wider than 12 centimetres.
The goal itself is precisely defined: 7.32 metres wide (8 yards) and 2.44 metres high (8 feet). These dimensions have been standardised since the late 19th century and remain unchanged for all levels of the game worldwide. Goal frames must be white, made of approved materials, and firmly anchored to the ground. Goal-line technology and VAR systems are now common at elite level to determine whether the ball has fully crossed the line.
