Shubman Gill Closes in on World No. 1 ODI Batting Rank, Just 11 Points Behind Daryl Mitchell
Shubman Gill has moved a step closer to the top spot in the ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings. His unbeaten 80 in the series opener against England at Edgbaston has lifted him 12 rating points, from 793 to 803. He now sits just 11 points behind New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell, who holds the No. 1 rank with 814.
Gill's knock came off 75 balls and included 11 fours and a six. He retired hurt during India's chase, but his innings kept India ahead of the required rate in a successful run chase of 259. The runs were enough to push him from third to a close second in the rankings table.
This is not new territory for the Indian captain. Gill has already held the World No. 1 ODI ranking twice before, once in late 2023 and again in early 2025. He is now chasing a third stint at the top, with the race against Mitchell heating up as both batters have more matches coming up.
Mitchell is currently on tour with New Zealand against the West Indies and has scored 65 and 28 in two ODIs so far, with three matches left to defend his spot. Gill has two more ODIs left in the series against England, at Cardiff and Lord's, to try to close the gap or move ahead.
Elsewhere in the same rankings update, Axar Patel was the other big mover for India. His all-round show against England, 57 not out and 4 for 62, lifted him 18 places to 73rd among batters and into the top 10 of the all-rounders' list for the first time, at ninth.
With two ODIs still to play in the series, the battle for the world's top-ranked ODI batter looks set to go down to the wire.
