How Does Volleyball Rotation Work?
Volleyball rotation is the mandatory movement of all six players one position clockwise whenever their team wins back the serve from the opponents. The player who rotates into Position 1 (back-right) becomes the server. This rule ensures every player serves and plays both front-row and back-row positions over the course of a set โ no one can stay in a specialised position permanently.
The six positions are numbered 1โ6 in a standard pattern: Position 1 is back-right (server), Position 2 is front-right, Position 3 is front-centre, Position 4 is front-left, Position 5 is back-left, and Position 6 is back-centre. After winning the right to serve, the team rotates clockwise: Position 1 moves to Position 6, Position 6 to Position 5, down to Position 2, which moves into Position 1 (and becomes the new server).
An important nuance: rotation order only matters at the moment of service contact. Once the ball is in play, players (except the libero) can move anywhere on their side of the court. This allows specialized positional play โ setters moving to the net, opposite hitters moving right โ as long as the rotation order was correct when the serve was struck. This tracker keeps the rotation order accurate so your team always knows who serves next.
