Tournament Recap

India won the men's cricket gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nisshin, Japan, beating Pakistan by 19 runs in the final to defend the title they won at the previous edition. Sri Lanka claimed bronze with a 63-run win over Bangladesh in the third-place play-off, rounding out the medal table for the tournament.

The 14-match, 11-team T20 competition ran from September 24 to October 3 at Korogi Sports Park, split into two groups in the league stage. Malaysia topped Group B unbeaten, while Afghanistan led Group A after group play, with Hong Kong, China and Nepal also advancing from their respective groups. Persistent rain disrupted the schedule throughout, washing out several group and quarter-final matches without a result.

In the knockouts, Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 6 wickets in a semi-final reduced to 13 overs a side due to a wet outfield, while India thrashed Sri Lanka by 124 runs in the other semi-final, bowling them out for just 45 after posting 169 for 7. That set up a final between Pakistan and India, with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh playing off for bronze on the same day.

In the gold medal match, Abhishek Sharma's 61 off 28 balls and an unbeaten 51 from Tilak Varma took India to 211 for 6, the highest innings total of the tournament. Pakistan's Hasan Nawaz, who finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 123 runs, responded with a sensational 96 off 51 balls, but his dismissal with the score at 192 for 6 ended the chase. Afghanistan's Arab Gul Momand topped the wicket-takers' list with 5 wickets, including tournament-best figures of 4 for 8. In the bronze medal match earlier in the day, Tharindu Ratnayake's 65 off 32 balls lifted Sri Lanka to 165 for 9, a total Bangladesh could not chase down as they were bowled out for 102.
