Harry Brook Hits 202, Fastest Ever ODI Double Century
Harry Brook scored 202 off 116 balls to become the first Englishman to hit an ODI double century, and the fastest double hundred in ODI history, as England piled up 429 for 4 against Sri Lanka in the third match of the Pakistan ODI tri-series at Rawalpindi on Thursday, October 22.
Brook's innings, which included 21 fours and 10 sixes, broke the previous record for the fastest ODI double century, Ishan Kishan's 131-ball effort against Bangladesh in 2022. No England men's player had previously reached 200 in an ODI innings; Alex Hales' 171 against Pakistan in 2016 had been the country's highest individual score in the format before Thursday.
England were put in to bat after Sri Lanka won the toss. Tom Banton made 50 and Ben Duckett 29 as the openers put on 74, before Joe Root joined captain Brook and the pair added 159 together. Root fell for 69 off 66 balls, caught off Asitha Fernando having already become the first Englishman to reach 8,000 ODI runs during the innings. Brook, batting at number four, kept finding the boundary throughout, reaching his century and then accelerating sharply through the back half of the innings. He eventually fell to Janith Liyanage, caught by Sahan Arachchige, with the score on 429 for 4 at the end of the 50th over. Will Jacks finished unbeaten on 66 off just 30 balls, with the pair adding 185 for the fourth wicket in only 77 balls.
Dunith Wellalage was Sri Lanka's most economical bowler, taking 2 for 56 from his 10 overs, while Dasun Shanaka and Eshan Malinga were both taken for more than nine an over as the Sri Lankan attack struggled to find any answers on a flat Rawalpindi pitch. Sri Lanka were left chasing an imposing target in the tri-series match, with the tournament's final set for Lahore on October 31.
