Konsa and Gabriel Score as Arsenal Beat Everton 2-0 to Draw Level With Man City
Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 at a rain-soaked Emirates Stadium on Saturday, October 24, and moved level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. Defenders Ezri Konsa and Gabriel scored the goals, with Gabriel's coming on his 200th Premier League appearance.
Konsa opened the scoring after seven minutes. A corner led to a scramble at the back post. Gabriel's header into the ground took a deflection, and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford touched it onto the crossbar. Konsa then poked the ball in for his first Arsenal goal. It was also the Gunners' first non-penalty set-piece goal of the season, ending a wait that had lasted since the campaign began.
Arsenal had several good chances to add to their lead and had to wait until the 68th minute for the second. Ben White, who was making his 200th appearance for the club, picked out the back post with a cross after a triple substitution. Gabriel was unmarked and headed into the bottom-left corner. It was his 21st Premier League goal and his first that did not come from a set piece. It was also his 14th league header, a tally only Olivier Giroud has bettered for Arsenal in the competition. Two centre-backs scoring in the same league game was a first for the club since February 2024.
The win was not without worry. Gabriel stayed down early in the second half after a clearance and needed treatment, but he returned to the pitch. Arsenal were already without Bukayo Saka after he picked up a quad issue in Munich in midweek. Viktor Gyokeres and Mikel Merino were given their first Premier League starts of the season as Mikel Arteta made four changes from the win at Nottingham Forest.
It was a seventh win in eight league games for the reigning champions and an 11th from 13 in all competitions. They and City are both on 21 points. Everton, who had made three changes after their unbeaten start was ended by a 2-0 home loss to Chelsea, were positive in spells but remain with just one win in 22 visits to the Emirates.
