Chelsea's Mamadou Sarr Completes Season-Long Loan to Real Sociedad

Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr has completed a season-long loan move to Real Sociedad, giving the young centre-back a fresh opportunity to secure regular first-team football in La Liga.

The 20-year-old Senegal international arrived in San Sebastian to undergo his medical before the move was finalised, with the loan carrying no option to buy. Sarr joined Chelsea from Strasbourg last summer in a deal worth around €14m, but featured just seven times for the Blues, including one appearance during their triumphant FIFA Club World Cup campaign, before being squeezed out by Chelsea's crowded central defensive options.

With Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Jorrel Hato and Aaron Anselmino all ahead of him in Xabi Alonso's pecking order, a loan move away was seen as the best path forward for Sarr's development. Real Sociedad had also been tracking Nayef Aguerd before turning their attention to the Chelsea academy graduate, taking advantage of head coach Alonso's connections at the club to get the deal done.

Sarr will now compete for a starting role at the heart of Pellegrino Matarazzo's defence, with the Basque club also able to call on him in the Europa League and Copa del Rey this season.
