Calvert-Lewin Equaliser Earns Leeds 1-1 Draw With Man United as Carrick Pressure Builds
Leeds United and Manchester United drew 1-1 at Elland Road on Sunday, October 18, in a fiery Roses derby in the Premier League. Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead before the break, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised for Leeds early in the second half. The result extended United's winless run in the league to five matches and kept the pressure on head coach Michael Carrick.
United had the better of a tight first half. Mbeumo gave them the lead in the 35th minute. He slipped away from Leeds defender James Justin and turned in a low cross from Youri Tielemans, for his fourth goal of the season. It was the first time this season that United have led at half-time in a Premier League match. Leeds missed two chances to respond straight away, as Ao Tanaka's tame effort was easily gathered by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, and Calvert-Lewin headed wide.
United replaced Martínez with Noussair Mazraoui at half-time. Leeds, coached by Daniel Farke, started the second half strongly and got the equaliser they deserved in the 51st minute. Tarik Muharemović headed a corner down, the ball fell to Calvert-Lewin on the edge of the six-yard box, and he chested it down, held off Mbeumo's challenge and smashed it into the net.
It was Calvert-Lewin's 99th career goal and his seventh in his last seven Premier League appearances. He has also now scored in six of his last seven home league games. He was a constant problem for United's defence, and was named Man of the Match by Sports Mole.
Leeds had 61% of the possession and 21 touches in United's penalty area, against 12 for United in Leeds' box. United had 13 shots, with three on target, compared with 12 for Leeds and five on target. Carrick will be frustrated that another poorly defended set piece cost his side a lead.
The draw leaves United 13th in the table and still without a league win in five matches. Leeds are seventh. United had already played a Champions League match during the week, when they lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid.
