Lauren James Double Helps Chelsea Women Beat Tottenham 6-2 After Tight First Half
Chelsea Women beat Tottenham Hotspur Women 6-2 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, October 18, in the Women's Super League. The score was 1-1 at half-time. Chelsea then scored five goals in the second half. Lauren James scored twice. Ellie Carpenter also scored twice. Nüsken and Maika Hamano scored from the bench.
James opened the scoring for Chelsea. Tottenham fought back and deserved their equaliser. In the 42nd minute, Matilda Vinberg headed in at the far post. Spurs won the ball in midfield, Holdt laid it off to Julie Blakstad, and Blakstad crossed from the left. It was only the second goal Chelsea had conceded in the WSL this season. At half-time, Spurs were on course to take a point off Chelsea for the first time in the WSL.
The game changed after the break. Carpenter put Chelsea back in front in the 58th minute. Alyssa Thompson did much of the work down the left and cut the ball back. Carpenter turned and fired in with her left foot. Four minutes later, James picked up the ball in the centre circle, dribbled past Tōko Koga and found the bottom right corner. It was 3-1.
Substitute Nüsken made it 4-1 in the 67th minute. Hamano passed to Walsh, who played a first-time dink around the corner, and Nüsken smashed it past goalkeeper Kop. That was three goals in nine minutes. James nearly had a hat-trick before she was taken off in the 72nd minute to a big ovation. Aggie Beever-Jones replaced her.
Hamano scored with a long-range shot into the top right corner in the 86th minute. Tottenham replied almost straight away, as Gaupset robbed Walsh and scored in the 87th. Carpenter finished the scoring in stoppage time, firing home again with her left foot after a cut-back.
It was a rampant win for Sonia Bompastor in her 50th WSL game as Chelsea manager. Chelsea are second, two points behind Manchester City, who beat Brighton 3-2. Tottenham have now lost all 14 of their WSL meetings with Chelsea. They also conceded six goals for the second game in a row.
