Shadab Hits 113* as Pakistan Beat England
Shadab Khan scored an unbeaten 113 as Pakistan beat England by one wicket in Lahore on October 25, securing a place in the tri-series final.
England batted first and were bowled out for 241 with 20 balls unused. Ben Duckett made 105, his fifth ODI century and the first against Pakistan. Pakistan then slid to 154/9 in their chase of 242. They were still 88 runs short. Gus Atkinson removed Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam. Debutant Henry Crocombe took the wicket of Saim Ayub.
That is when Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf took over. Shadab farmed the strike with great care. Rauf faced only 19 balls in an 80-ball stand and scored seven. Shadab was given out lbw to Atkinson on 97 and began walking off. A review showed a tiny inside edge, and he stayed. Tom Banton's throw from mid-on could have run out Rauf when Pakistan needed 18. Rauf then argued with Will Jacks over a wide, and Joe Root had to calm things down. Rauf finished the job by driving Crocombe for four with 17 balls to spare.
Shadab hit 113 not out off 96 balls, with 13 fours and five sixes. It was his maiden ODI century. According to BBC Sport, it is the highest score by a No. 8 batter in an ODI. The 89-run unbroken stand for the tenth wicket is the highest last-wicket partnership in a successful ODI chase.
The result was Pakistan's second win over England in this tri-series. They also won by 87 runs at Rawalpindi on October 20. Several reports say the win has already put Pakistan into the final. England captain Harry Brook praised his side's effort after the match, but they now need to beat Sri Lanka to stay alive.
It was a day of milestones for Pakistan in Lahore. Shaheen Afridi also reached 150 ODI wickets in the very first over. Pakistan's next match is against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, October 27.
