Inter Beat Fiorentina 2-1 With Late Goals
Inter beat Fiorentina 2-1 at San Siro on October 25 after two stoppage-time goals, and went level on points with Lazio at the top of Serie A.
It looked like a frustrating afternoon for the home side. Inter dominated the ball and had the best chances, but Fiorentina goalkeeper David de Gea kept making saves. Carlos Augusto also hit the crossbar twice. Fiorentina then struck against the run of play. In the 65th minute, Alex Jimenez shot from outside the box, and the ball flew into the top corner past debutant Inter goalkeeper Ivan Provedel.
Inter kept pushing, and the late reward came in the 91st minute. Marcus Thuram made a solo run and fired a diagonal shot to level the match. Moments later, Thuram was fouled by Valdepenas inside the box. The referee gave a penalty, and Piotr Zielinski stepped up in the 98th minute. He sent his spot-kick into the top corner for the winner.
It was Inter's fifth comeback win of the season. They have also conceded for the 10th time this term. Head coach Cristian Chivu was not worried about his team's defensive problems after the game. Inter were missing John Stones, Curtis Jones, Lautaro Martinez, Benjamin Pavard and Luis Henrique through injury. Fiorentina were without Fabiano Parisi, Arthur Atta and Luca Ranieri.
The win took Inter back to the top of the table on 22 points. They are level with surprise pace-setters Lazio and ahead on goal difference. It also extended their lead over Roma. Fiorentina remain 18th, in the relegation zone, and are winless in four league games.
Inter had won 3-1 at Bologna in their previous league game, and they have now won each of their last two. Their earlier results this season include a 3-2 home win over Napoli and a 5-3 win over Udinese.
Inter now turn to a busy week. They travel to Venezia on Wednesday, October 28, and then face AC Milan in the derby on Saturday, October 31. They host Como on November 8.
