PSG Beat Lyon 2-0 With Late Sub Goals to Top Ligue 1
Paris Saint-Germain beat Lyon 2-0 at the Parc des Princes on Monday, October 26, to go top of Ligue 1. Both goals came from substitutes. Senny Mayulu scored in the 72nd minute and Mika Godts added a second in the 84th. The Matchday 8 game had been moved from Sunday after a police directive in Paris.
It was a tight first half. Lyon defended well and frustrated the home side. Goalkeeper Dominik Greif saved a low shot from Ferran Torres early on. At the other end, Matvey Safonov kept PSG level with saves from Ernest Nuamah, Julien Duranville and Zachary Athekame.
Mayulu broke the deadlock with 18 minutes left. He drilled a low shot inside the near post from the edge of the box, after a pass from Godts. Godts then scored his own goal after a quick counter-attack. Quentin Ndjantou played a long pass, and Godts struck it into the right corner. It was the Belgian's first goal for PSG, since signing from Ajax.
The win was PSG's fifth in a row in Ligue 1 and their eighth straight in all competitions. It took them to the top of the table for the first time this season, on 17 points from eight games. They are one point clear of Rennes, who had gone top a day earlier with a 3-0 win over Strasbourg.
Lyon stay on 14 points and slip to fifth. They are one point behind Lille and Monaco. Lyon had gone top on goal difference a week earlier. They also beat PSG 2-1 at the Parc des Princes last April.
PSG won this one despite a number of injuries to key players. Luis Enrique's side have a habit of finishing strongly. They have scored 13 of their 16 Ligue 1 goals this season from the 60th minute onwards.
Rennes visit Nice on Saturday, October 31.
