Kyoto Sanga Come Back From Two Goals Down to Beat Newcastle Jets 5-2 in AFC Champions League Elite
Kyoto Sanga came back from two goals down to beat Newcastle Jets 5-2 at Sanga Stadium by Kyocera in the AFC Champions League Elite on October 27, with Alex Negueba scoring twice and former Central Coast Mariners star Marco Tulio also on target.
The Australian side looked set for an upset in the first half. Patrick Wood scored two penalties for the Jets, one in the 13th minute and the other in first-half stoppage time, after Kyoto defender Shichi gave away both spot-kicks following VAR checks. Kyoto went into the break trailing 2-0 but quickly pulled one back. Hisashi Appiah Tawiah scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time, which changed the mood of the game completely.
Kyoto, coached by Ranko Popovic, then took over the match after half-time. Alex Negueba equalised in the 56th minute and Marco Tulio put them ahead four minutes later in the 60th. Rafael Elias, known as Papagaio, made it 4-2 in the 67th minute, and Negueba added his second goal in the 84th minute to complete the 5-2 victory.
The result is Kyoto's second win in the competition and lifts them up the East Region table. For the Jets, it is a third straight defeat. They have lost their opening three games by a combined score of 15-4 and sit bottom of the 16-team East table. They return to A-League action against Wellington on Saturday before hosting Shanghai Port in their next Asian game.
Elsewhere in the East Region on Tuesday, Vissel Kobe beat Daejeon Hana Citizen 1-0 in South Korea. Ren Komatsu glanced in a cross from Gotoku Sakai in the 83rd minute to give Kobe a third straight win in the competition. Michael Skibbe's side have nine points from three games, while Daejeon remain on four.
Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim also won, beating Port FC of Thailand 3-0 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. Silva scored in the 53rd minute, Bergson added a second in the 62nd, and Stoichkov completed the scoring in the 86th. It was JDT's second win in a row. Port have lost all three of their matches.
The top eight clubs in the 16-team East and West leagues progress to the last 16, so every point is important at this stage of the competition.
