India Women End 44-Year Wait, Beat China 1-0 for Hockey Gold
India won the women's hockey gold medal at the Asian Games, beating defending champions China 1-0 in the final at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium, ending a 44-year wait for the title and securing a direct quota spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Lalremsiami Hmarzote scored the only goal of the match, a powerful reverse-hit strike in the 10th minute, in what was also her 200th international appearance for India. The goal held up through three more quarters of sustained Chinese pressure, with goalkeeper Savita Punia's penalty-stroke save in the second quarter proving a crucial moment in preserving the lead. China pulled their goalkeeper in the closing stages for an extra attacker, but India's defence held firm to the final whistle.
The win is India's first women's hockey gold at the Asian Games since 1982, when the team won the inaugural edition of the event in New Delhi. India had reached the final with a 2-0 win over South Korea in the semi-final, while China came through on penalties against Japan.
The gold is India's 16th of these Games, with the women's hockey team's achievement arriving on the same day the men's team reached their own gold medal final against Malaysia, scheduled for Saturday, October 3. It marks the first time since the 1998 Bangkok Games that both India's men's and women's hockey teams have reached the final at the same edition, with the men now chasing a fifth Asian Games title and back-to-back gold after their Hangzhou 2023 triumph.
