About the Big Bash League
The Big Bash League was launched in 2011-12 as a city-based Twenty20 franchise competition, replacing the earlier state-based domestic T20 setup. Eight teams representing Australia's major cities compete each summer, running from December through late January or February.
The tournament quickly distinguished itself with a family-friendly, entertainment-first approach and a willingness to experiment with the format — including innovations like Power Surge overs and the X-Factor substitution rule introduced in later seasons. This innovation-driven identity has made it one of the most-watched domestic T20 leagues in the world.
Perth Scorchers have been the league's most successful franchise, winning six titles across the competition's history, with Sydney Sixers close behind on four. The tournament features a round-robin league stage followed by knockout finals to crown the champion each season.
Beyond entertainment value, the BBL has served as an important pathway for young Australian talent and international players to gain experience in a high-pressure franchise format, contributing to its growing global following.
