Real Sociedad Beat Levante 2-1, Sit Fifth
Real Sociedad beat Levante 2-1 at the Reale Arena on October 25 to win their fourth straight La Liga game and sit fifth in the table.
Sociedad made a fast start. Orri Oskarsson scored in the sixth minute from close range to put the hosts ahead. Levante replied soon after. In the 22nd minute, right back Nacho Perez finished from eight yards after a pass from Thiago Fernandez to make it 1-1.
The home side restored their lead just five minutes later. Benat Turrientes scored in the 27th minute, set up by Goncalo Guedes, to make it 2-1. That proved to be the winner. The goals all came inside the first half hour, and the rest of the match was a long period of Sociedad control without a third goal.
Sociedad dominated the numbers under coach Pellegrino Matarazzo. They had 62 per cent of the possession and 17 shots to Levante's six. Their expected goals figure was 2.45, compared with 0.64 for the visitors. Only three of Sociedad's shots were on target, though, against two for Levante, which left the visitors in the match until the end.
It was Sociedad's fifth win in their last six games. During the current run of four wins, they have also beaten Malaga, Deportivo and Valencia, in addition to Levante. The result takes them to 19 points from 10 games, which puts them fifth in La Liga. Real Betis are ahead of them in fourth with 20 points.
The Basque club won the Copa del Rey last season, beating Atletico Madrid 4-3 on penalties in the final in Seville, and that victory earned them a place in this season's Europa League. They are now putting together a useful league run alongside it.
Levante have 10 points from 10 matches and sit 14th. They have won only two of their ten games this season.
Sociedad's next match is the Basque derby away at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, November 1. Levante host Atletico Madrid on Saturday, October 31.
