Hoffenheim End Leverkusen's Winning Run 3-0
Hoffenheim beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 at home on October 25, scoring all three goals in the last 11 minutes to end Leverkusen's run of six straight wins.
The match was goalless for most of the contest. Hoffenheim started aggressively and pressed high. Their first two shots both came from former Leverkusen forward Adam Hlozek in the opening minutes. Hlozek also hit the post in the 38th minute. Leverkusen, who made six changes after a 2-0 Europa League win at OFI Crete in midweek, controlled much of the play in heavy rain but lacked precision.
The breakthrough came in the 79th minute. Leverkusen captain Edmond Tapsoba caught Fisnik Asllani's ankle while defending a cross, and referee Robert Hartmann pointed to the spot after a VAR review. Substitute Andrej Kramaric scored the penalty. It was also Hoffenheim's 1,000th Bundesliga goal.
Leverkusen pushed for an equaliser and left space at the back. Hoffenheim broke on the counter in the 89th minute, and Alexander Prass scored with a thunderous effort after Kramaric's pass. But Prass was shown a second yellow card for taking off his shirt in celebration, and he left the pitch. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Max Moerstedt scored the third goal.
Hoffenheim kept their first Bundesliga clean sheet of the season. They had 3.46 expected goals to 0.62 for Leverkusen, and six of their shots hit the target to just one from the visitors. It was Hoffenheim's third win in a row in all competitions, following a 3-0 win over Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday.
For Leverkusen, it was the first defeat after six straight wins in all competitions. They had been unbeaten in their last five Bundesliga games and have 13 points, while Hoffenheim climb to nine.
Leverkusen host Stuttgart on Saturday, October 31. Hoffenheim visit Werder Bremen on the same day.
