Ajinkya Rahane Signs as Marquee Player for Amsterdam Flames in ETPL

Ajinkya Rahane has signed with Amsterdam Flames as the franchise's marquee player for the inaugural European T20 Premier League. The tournament is set to begin on August 26.

Rahane retired from international cricket on July 30. Amsterdam Flames is co-owned by former Australia captain Steve Waugh, who reached out to Rahane soon after his retirement was announced. Rahane said he asked for a day to think it over before agreeing to join.

Rahane played 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is for India. His last international appearance came against West Indies in a two-match Test series in July 2023. He also led India in Test cricket during his career and remains one of the country's most respected former captains.

Steve Waugh, Co-Founder and Chief Cricket Officer of Amsterdam Flames, praised Rahane's leadership and composure under pressure. Tim Thomas, CEO of Amsterdam Flames, called the signing a defining moment for the club. Rahane is currently working as a commentator for The Hundred in England.

The ETPL is a new tournament aimed at growing cricket's presence across Europe. Rahane's arrival is being seen as a major boost for the league ahead of its first season.
