West Indies Face 2027 World Cup Qualifiers Again After Afghanistan Seal Direct Spot

Two-time champions West Indies will have to navigate the qualifying rounds for the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup for the third consecutive edition, after Afghanistan's win over Ireland in Belfast sealed their own direct spot and closed the door on the Caribbean side.

The top eight teams in the ODI rankings as of September 30, 2026 — excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe — earn automatic qualification. West Indies currently sit 10th in the rankings and cannot make up enough ground even with two ODIs against India still to play before the cut-off.

Under the revamped 14-team qualification structure, West Indies will enter the 2027 Qualifier alongside Ireland — the two lowest-ranked non-host Full Members — plus teams progressing from the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 and the Qualifier Playoff. Only the Qualifier winner advances directly to the World Cup's group stage; the teams finishing second, third, and fourth instead enter a newly introduced Super Series for one further spot.

West Indies missed the 2023 World Cup for the first time in the tournament's history after finishing fifth in the Super Six stage of that qualifier, a shock that also cost them a place in the subsequent Champions Trophy. The 2027 Qualifier is scheduled to begin in February.
