It is a chastening start for Carrick, who takes charge with United expected to challenge for the title after finishing third last season. The result leaves the Red Devils under early pressure following a dismal afternoon on Humberside, with fans already calling for further defensive reinforcements before the transfer window shuts. For Hull, it is a dream return to the Premier League and an immediate statement that they won't be there just to make up the numbers.
