Joao Pedro has signed a new contract with Chelsea that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2034, with the Brazilian striker also taking on the club's No. 9 shirt as he enters his second season in west London.

Pedro takes over the No. 9 jersey vacated by Liam Delap, stepping into a shirt with a difficult recent history at the club. Since Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's era, a string of high-profile attackers including Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao, Gonzalo Higuain and Romelu Lukaku have struggled to make a lasting impact wearing the number, a trend some fans have dubbed the "curse of Khalid Boulahrouz." Pedro is set to begin the new season as Xabi Alonso's first-choice striker, with both Delap and Nicolas Jackson made available for transfer as the club reshapes its forward options.
