Barcelona Thrash Elche 5-0 in La Liga Title Defence Opener

Barcelona made an emphatic start to their La Liga title defence, thrashing Elche 5-0 away at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero, with braces from Raphinha and Fermin Lopez and a debut goal from new signing Karim Adeyemi.

Raphinha broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, converting a penalty after being brought down in the box, before Adeyemi doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time, latching onto a Lamine Yamal pass to slot home on his league debut following his summer move from Borussia Dortmund. Barcelona were forced into an early reshuffle before the break when Gavi had to be replaced due to a knee issue, but continued to dominate after the interval.

Raphinha added his second and Barcelona's third after the hour mark, teed up by fellow debutant Anthony Gordon, who had come on at half-time and looked lively throughout. Fermin Lopez then struck twice in quick succession, first tapping in after more good work from Gordon before rounding off the scoring with a stunning turn-and-finish from the edge of the box. Hansi Flick's side were missing several key names, including new marquee signing Rodri, who was left out of the matchday squad entirely as he continues to build fitness.

The result gives Barcelona the perfect start as they chase a third straight La Liga title, with the Catalans looking sharp in attack despite a rotated lineup, and sends an early statement to the rest of the division ahead of what promises to be another closely fought title race in Spain this season.
