Japan Stun China to End Nine-Title Streak, Win First Table Tennis Team Gold Since 1966

Japan's men's table tennis team pulled off a stunning upset at the Asian Games, beating China 3-2 to win gold in front of a home crowd at Sky Hall Toyota, ending China's bid for a ninth consecutive title in the event and claiming Japan's first gold in it since 1966.

With the tie level at 2-2, 19-year-old Sora Matsushima won the decisive fifth match, beating Wen Ruibo 3-1. Earlier, Tomokazu Harimoto had levelled the score at 2-2 by sweeping Wang Chuqin 3-0, after Wang had earlier laboured to a 3-2 win over Matsushima in the opening tie.

China had cause for celebration later in the day, however, as their women's team swept Japan 3-0 to claim the women's team title, with Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu and Kuai Man all winning their matches.
