Nishiyama and Ono Give Japan Kata Double on Karate's Opening Day

Karate opened its Asian Games programme in Nagoya with golds shared across five nations, headlined by home favourite Kakeru Nishiyama in the men's individual kata.

In kumite, Kazakhstan's Zholaman Bigabyl won the men's -55kg title, Kuwait's Abdullah Shaaban took -60kg gold, and Uzbekistan's Abdul Vakhkhob Rashidov won -67kg. In the women's divisions, Kazakhstan's Sofya Berultseva won +68kg, China's Li Gong and Qiaoqiao Li won -61kg and -68kg respectively.

In kata, Japan completed a home double as Nishiyama won the men's individual title and Maho Ono won the women's, both ahead of Hong Kong medallists in each event.
