Coventry Thrash Newcastle 4-1 for First Premier League Home Win in 25 Years

Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday, October 12, to claim their first Premier League home win in 25 years. The result lifts Frank Lampard's side out of the relegation zone.

Coventry made a dream start. Jack Rudoni scored from the penalty spot in the opening minutes, which was the club's first Premier League goal at home since John Hartson scored in a 1-0 win over Sunderland in April 2001. Newcastle tried to respond, and Harvey Barnes had their first shot on target after a pass from Joe Willock, but Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth saved it comfortably.

The hosts doubled their lead three minutes after the break. In the 48th minute, Sidiki Cherif reacted quickest after Newcastle cleared a throw-in and drove a low shot past the visiting goalkeeper. It was Cherif's first goal for the club.

Newcastle needed something special and got it in the 70th minute. Sven Botman lined up a shot from the left edge of the penalty area and hit a bullet that Rushworth could not stop to make it 2-1. The momentum seemed to swing, but Coventry restored their two-goal lead in the 81st minute through Ellis Simms. Debutant substitute Stephen Mfuni then put the finishing touch on the night with a thumping shot in the 86th minute to make it 4-1.

It was Coventry's first home win of the season and their second Premier League win in a row, following their earlier victory away at Nottingham Forest. The Sky Blues now have eight points from six matches and are level on points with Manchester United. Their win comes more than 9,000 days after their last home victory in the top flight.

Lampard said afterwards that his players must keep their feet on the ground despite the result. For Newcastle, it was another miserable Monday night. Their last Monday fixture ended in a 4-1 loss to Leeds, and they suffered the same heavy defeat again in Coventry less than a month later.
