Kane's Brace Extends Champions League Streak to Nine, but Viking Hold Bayern 3-3
Harry Kane scored twice to extend his Champions League scoring run to nine consecutive matches, but Bayern Munich were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw by Norwegian champions Viking in Stavanger on Tuesday, October 13. It was a historic result for Viking, who collected their first point in the Champions League.
The hosts made a shock start. Gianni Stensness headed Viking in front from a corner in the second minute, and Peter Christiansen doubled the lead with a swift counter-attack in the 38th minute. Bayern went into the interval 2-0 down.
Kane then sparked the fightback. In the 54th minute he scored a penalty after a lengthy VAR review of a foul on Konrad Laimer. Six minutes later, the England captain headed home the equaliser. He was denied twice by Viking goalkeeper Arild Østbø with headers, and also produced an inch-perfect pass to Laimer in the move that led to Luis Díaz putting Bayern 3-2 ahead in the 71st minute.
Bayern could not hold on. Michael Olise received a second yellow card in the 74th minute, and Viking pushed hard against ten men. Substitute Herman Haugen headed in a late equaliser in the 90th minute to earn Viking a famous point.
Kane's brace means he has now scored in nine straight Champions League games. That equals the second-longest scoring streak in the competition, matching Robert Lewandowski, who did it twice for Bayern, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who scored in nine consecutive matches for Manchester United in 2002-03. According to UEFA, Kane is the fourth player to reach that mark. Only Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored in 11 successive matches in 2018, has had a longer run. Kane needs two more games to equal it and three to break it.
The draw leaves Bayern on four points after two matches, in fourth place in the league phase table. Viking sit 26th with their first point of the campaign.
