India Name 16-Man Test Squad for New Zealand Tour, Gill Captain, Bumrah Included
The BCCI has named India's 16-member Test squad for the two-match series in New Zealand. The squad was announced on Friday, October 16, along with the ODI squads. Shubman Gill will captain the side. KL Rahul is the vice-captain.
Here is the squad by role.
- Batters: Shubman Gill (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan
- All-rounders: Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Anshul Kamboj, Washington Sundar
- Wicketkeepers: KL Rahul (vc), Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel
- Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj
The squad has three wicketkeeper-batters. Rahul, Pant and Jurel all keep wicket. It also has four all-rounders, which gives the team plenty of options with bat and ball. Jadeja is the No. 1 Test all-rounder in the ICC rankings on 422 points.
Jasprit Bumrah is in the Test squad after being left out of both ODI groups. He is fourth in the ICC Test bowling rankings on 853 points. He will lead a pace attack that also has Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep. Kuldeep Yadav is the only specialist spinner. Jadeja and Sundar add more spin options.
Gill is ninth in the Test batting rankings on 709 points. He will lead the Test side after captaining India in the first three ODIs. He leaves the ODI series after the third match to prepare for the Tests.
The series matters for India in the World Test Championship. They are fifth in the 2025-27 table on 51.52%. Every result in New Zealand will count. New Zealand are second on 72.22%. They will name their own 14-man Test squad in early November.
