Serve percentage measures how often a player's first serve lands in play, calculated as first serves made divided by total service points. It is one of the most closely tracked stats in tennis because the serve is the one shot a player fully controls — no opponent influences its outcome — making it a clean measure of a player's consistency under pressure.

Alongside first-serve percentage, double faults (missing both the first and second serve on the same point) and aces (unreturnable serves) round out the full picture of serve quality. A player can have a low first-serve percentage but still serve effectively if their second serve is reliable — which is why serve stats are usually read together, not in isolation.

Winning percentage on first-serve points is consistently far higher than on second-serve points for nearly every player at every level, because a strong first serve puts the returner on the defensive immediately — which is exactly why a dip in first-serve percentage during a match (often from fatigue or nerves) is one of the earliest warning signs coaches watch for, well before the score itself reflects trouble.

Double faults carry outsized psychological weight for the same reason serve percentage matters generally: a double fault hands the opponent a free point with zero return of investment, and a cluster of them at a critical moment (break point, set point) can shift momentum far more than the single lost point suggests on the scoreboard.

Around 60-65% is typical at the professional level. Above 65% is considered strong, and some players with less powerful but more consistent serves post 70%+ regularly. Below 55% usually signals either an aggressive, high-risk serving strategy or a player struggling with consistency that match.
