The formula's exponent (1.06) captures a simple physiological truth: performance degrades predictably as distance increases, because sustaining a given pace for longer draws increasingly on aerobic capacity rather than pure speed — this is why it works reasonably well from a 400m all the way out to a 10,000m, despite those being almost entirely different physiological events.

Coaches use this kind of cross-distance prediction to spot athletes whose natural strengths don't match their current racing distance — a sprinter whose predicted 800m time (based on their 400m) is far faster than their actual 800m result is often flagged as someone who hasn't yet developed the endurance to match their raw speed, a coachable gap rather than a talent ceiling.

It's most accurate when predicting between distances with similar physiological demands — 400m to 800m, or 5000m to 10,000m — since both rely on comparable energy systems. Predicting from a 100m sprint time to a 10,000m distance stretches the model well beyond what it was designed for, since sprinting and long-distance running draw on almost entirely different fitness qualities.
