What Is a Relay Handoff Zone and How Are Splits Calculated?
A relay race splits a fixed total distance across four runners, each covering an equal leg (100m in a 4×100m relay, 400m in a 4×400m relay). The baton must be passed entirely within a marked 30m takeover/exchange zone — passing outside this zone results in disqualification, regardless of how fast the team ran.

A clean, well-practiced baton exchange can be worth more than any single runner's raw speed — elite 4×100m teams drill the handoff itself for hours because a fumbled or out-of-zone pass instantly erases whatever time advantage the team built up through pure running, which is exactly why relay squads are picked as much for exchange chemistry as individual 100m times.
This is also why the fastest individual sprinters on a team don't always run the anchor (final) leg — anchor runners are chosen for composure receiving a baton at full sprint under pressure, while the second and third legs, which involve both receiving AND handing off, reward runners with the best all-round exchange technique rather than just outright speed.
