PSG Beat Villarreal 6-0 and Set Champions League Record With Four Goals in 16 Minutes and Two Seconds
Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Villarreal 6-0 at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Tuesday, November 3, in Matchday 4 of the Champions League league phase. PSG scored four goals in just 16 minutes and two seconds, according to Opta. That is the fastest time ever for a team to reach four goals in a Champions League match.
The previous record was 20 minutes. Real Madrid set it in a 6-2 home win over Dinamo Zagreb in 2011. PSG broke it with ease. The defending champions took advantage of a series of errors by Villarreal, who lost the ball in their own half several times.
The goals came in a rush. Joao Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute, following a corner. Desire Doue made it 2-0 three minutes later. Senny Mayulu added the third in the 13th minute. Fabian Ruiz then completed the four-goal burst in the 17th minute. PSG had a 4-0 lead before the first quarter of the match was over.
The second half was calmer, but PSG did not stop scoring. Ruiz scored his second of the night in the 50th minute. Then 17-year-old David Boly came off the bench and scored on his Champions League debut in the 78th minute to make it 6-0. PSG played without Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes. That did not seem to matter.
PSG have now won all four of their matches in the league phase. They are alone at the top of the table with 12 points, and they have scored 20 goals in four games. It was their 10th straight win in the competition. They have not lost any of their last 14 Champions League matches. That equals the longest unbeaten run by a French club in the competition, which Lyon set between 2004 and 2006.
The win was also reported as PSG's biggest away win in the Champions League. Luis Enrique's side are on course for direct qualification for the round of 16. For Villarreal, it was a night to forget. They have conceded 14 goals in their first four games in the competition.
