Sarvesh Kushare and Ancy Sojan Miss Gold by Whisker to Win Athletics Silvers

India's Sarvesh Kushare and Ancy Sojan both won silver on Day 8 of Asian Games athletics in Nagoya. Both led their finals for long stretches. Both lost gold by the smallest of margins.

In the men's high jump, Kushare cleared 2.25m. He had been flawless through 2.22m, clearing every height at the first attempt. He needed a second attempt at 2.25m. Chinese Taipei's Fu Chao-hsuan cleared the same height first time. Both men then failed three times at 2.28m. Fu took gold on countback. Kushare arrived in Nagoya after a Commonwealth Games silver earlier this year.

In the women's long jump, Ancy jumped 6.53m on her fifth attempt and held top spot for most of the final. China's Huang Yingying then produced 6.55m on her last jump. That was just 2cm better. It is Ancy's second successive Asian Games silver. Her national record stands at 6.88m.

India's Shaili Singh held a podium place for much of the final too. China's Tan Mengyi jumped 6.46m in the last round to push her to fourth. Shaili's best was 6.42m.
