Winfred Yavi Wins 5000m to Complete Distance Treble for Bahrain

Winfred Yavi won the women's 5000m at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Monday, taking her third gold of the Games and completing a distance treble for Bahrain. She won in 15:10.18.

Japan's Nozomi Tanaka took silver, the same colour she won behind Yavi in the 10,000m. India's Parul Chaudhary took bronze, her second medal in two days after her steeplechase bronze on Sunday.

Yavi opened her Games with 10,000m gold on September 25, winning in 32:39.18. Two days later she won the 3000m steeplechase in an Asian Games record of 9:04.36. The 5000m completes the set. At the previous Games in Hangzhou she won the 1500m and the steeplechase.

Her wins are a big part of Bahrain's medal haul. Eight of the country's nine golds so far have come in athletics, and the team sits seventh in the medal table with nine golds and 14 medals in total. Yavi also won the 2024 Paris Olympic gold in the steeplechase.
