Shubman Gill Smashes Fastest-Ever ODI Double Century, Second of His Career

Shubman Gill smashed the fastest double century in ODI history, reaching 200 off just 117 balls as India chased West Indies' record 405/7 in the second ODI at Guwahati, breaking Ishan Kishan's previous record of 126 balls.

Gill brought up his fifty off 38 balls, his century off 62 balls (the fastest ODI hundred ever by an Indian captain), and then accelerated through the second hundred to reach the double century in the 40th over. It is his second career ODI double century, after his 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023, making him only the second batter in ODI history, after Rohit Sharma, to score two double hundreds in the format. The innings also confirmed his status as the fastest Indian to 11 ODI centuries, reached in just 67 innings, beating Virat Kohli's previous record of 82, and India's quickest century against West Indies, beating Virender Sehwag's 69-ball hundred from 2011.

Rohit Sharma matched his captain for the first hundred runs of the chase, reaching his own century off 72 balls and passing 12,000 ODI runs, before Gill went on alone to the double ton. The pair's opening stand put India in a commanding position in their chase of 406, the highest run chase ever attempted by the hosts in ODI cricket.
