Shubman Gill's 223 Is Highest-Ever ODI Score by an Indian Captain

Shubman Gill finished his innings on 223 against West Indies in the second ODI at Guwahati, a new career-best score in the format and the highest ODI innings ever played by an Indian while serving as captain.

The knock surpassed his previous career-best of 208, made against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023, when he was not yet India's full-time ODI captain. It came during India's chase of West Indies' record 405/7, with Gill reaching his fifty in 38 balls, his century in 62, and the fastest double century in ODI history off just 117 balls, before extending the innings further as India closed in on their target of 406.

The innings adds to a remarkable run of milestones in the same match: Gill's fastest-ever ODI double hundred, his second career double century (making him only the second player after Rohit Sharma to reach the mark twice), the fastest century by an Indian captain, and the fastest Indian to 11 ODI hundreds. Rohit Sharma also scored a century at the other end, in a chase built on the second-highest opening stand for India in ODI history.
