India's 406-run chase is their highest ever in ODI cricket
India have set a new record for their highest successful run chase in ODI cricket. They hunted down 406 runs against West Indies in the 2nd ODI at Guwahati. India finished on 406/2 in just 43.3 overs. They won the match by 8 wickets with 39 balls to spare.
The old mark belonged to India's famous chase against Australia in Jaipur in 2013. India made 362 in that game. The new chase beats it by 44 runs. India's chase of 351 against England in Pune in 2017 is another big one on the list. Kohli and Kedar Jadhav starred in that win. Neither of those chases came close to the size of this one.
The chase is also the highest in ODIs on Indian soil. It now sits second on the all-time list. Only South Africa's 438/9 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006 is bigger. Chasing more than 400 has always been rare. Most teams lose the match long before they get close.
India made it look simple. Rohit Sharma and captain Shubman Gill put on 255 runs in 158 balls for the first wicket. Rohit scored 101 off 75 balls. India hit 92 runs in the first 10 overs. That gave them a flying start and kept the required rate in check.
Gill then took the chase home with an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls. He hit 26 fours and 8 sixes. Virat Kohli chipped in with 29 off 19 balls. Ruturaj Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 31. Gill and Gaikwad shared an unbroken 86-run stand to finish the game. India scored at 9.33 runs per over through the innings.
The target was big because West Indies batted well first. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored hundreds in their 405/7. Most sides would have felt safe with that total. India's batters did not.
The win gives India a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The last ODI is on 3 October in New Chandigarh. Check the full scorecard and the series page for every detail of this historic chase.
