Australia Beat South Africa by 214 Runs in Durban to Take 1-0 Series Lead

Australia beat South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban, on Tuesday, October 13. The win gives them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Australia made 390 and 314 for 6 declared. South Africa replied with 284 and were bowled out for 206.

It is Australia's fourth successive Test win at Durban. The ground has been a happy hunting place for them for years. The result also gives them a strong start to the series on South African soil.

Matt Renshaw was named Player of the Match. He scored a career-best 190 in the first innings. That knock rescued Australia from 124 for 6 and took them to 390. He added a record ninth-wicket stand of 134 with Nathan Lyon along the way. Renshaw then made 82 in the second innings. He also took 2 wickets for 30 with the ball. It was a complete all-round show.

Australia took a first-innings lead of 106 runs. They then batted again and declared on 314 for 6. That left South Africa a huge target of 421 on a worn Kingsmead pitch. The home side never looked close. They were bowled out for 206 and lost by 214 runs.

Josh Hazlewood was the star with the ball. He finished with a career-best 6 for 49. It was a fitting end to a match in which Australia controlled most of the game. Steve Smith also made headlines earlier in the Test. He took his 221st catch and became the most successful non-wicketkeeper fielder in Test history.

South Africa had their moments. Wiaan Mulder took 4/68 and Marco Jansen took 3/68 in Australia's first innings. But their batters could not back up the bowlers.

The series now moves to Gqeberha for the next Test. Australia will want to build on this win. South Africa will need a quick response to stay alive in the series. Australia also climb in the World Test Championship table after this result.
