Shubman Gill Moves to 841 in ICC ODI Batting Rankings, Lead Over Daryl Mitchell Grows to 47 Points
India captain Shubman Gill has strengthened his hold on the No. 1 spot in the ICC men's ODI batting rankings. His rating has gone up from 801 to 841. That is a gain of 40 points.
The gap at the top has grown a lot. New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell is still second on 794. Gill led him by just 7 points before. The lead is now 47 points.
Gill's form in the home series against West Indies has been strong. He made an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls in the 2nd ODI at Guwahati. India chased down 406 in just 43.3 overs and won by 8 wickets. Gill and Rohit Sharma put on 255 runs for the first wicket in only 158 balls. Gill had also scored a century in the series opener at Thiruvananthapuram.
The ICC named Gill its Men's Player of the Month for September on October 13. It was his fifth award. That matches the record held by West Indies captain Hayley Matthews.
Two senior India batters also gained points. Virat Kohli rises from 767 to 781. Rohit Sharma rises from 758 to 770. They remain third and fourth. Rohit made 101 off 75 balls at Guwahati. It was his 35th ODI century. He also became the fastest opener to 10,000 ODI runs in the third ODI at New Chandigarh.
India now have three batters in the top four. KL Rahul has entered the list as well. He is joint 10th on 653, level with Ireland's Harry Tector.
Gill is also strong in the other format he captains. He is ninth in the men's Test batting rankings on 709.
India's next ODIs are a five-match series in New Zealand. It starts on November 4 at Eden Park, Auckland. Mitchell is in New Zealand's squad for the first three matches. The two players will be competing for the top spot as well as the series.
