Greece Beat Germany for First Time as Kourbelis Spoils Klopp's Home Debut

Greece beat Germany 1-0 in Augsburg for the first time in their history, with substitute Dimitris Kourbelis scoring the winner in the 74th minute to spoil Jurgen Klopp's home debut as Germany head coach. Germany controlled the game, with close to 80 percent possession in the first half, and Karim Adeyemi had their best early chances, but goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis kept the hosts out with several saves, including from Bambase Conte and a Joshua Kimmich free-kick after the break. The breakthrough came against the run of play when Christos Tzolis crossed into the box, Germany failed to clear, and Kourbelis, on for Zafeiris in the 59th minute, fired in a shot that took a deflection on its way past Alexander Nubel. It was Greece's first win in 11 meetings with Germany, and it gives Ivan Jovanovic's side two wins from two, both away from home, after their last-gasp victory over Serbia in Belgrade. Greece top Group A2 on six points, while Germany, who drew 1-1 with the Netherlands on Klopp's debut, have one point and are still without a win under him. Germany next host Serbia in Munich on October 1, and Greece welcome the Netherlands the same day.

Denmark Beat Wales 2-0 for First Nations League Win as Davies Own Goal Opens Scoring

Denmark claimed their first win of the 2026/27 Nations League, beating Wales 2-0 at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen through a Ben Davies own goal and a deflected strike from Gustav Isaksen , leaving Wales bottom of Group A4 without a point. Denmark dominated a first half in which Isaksen had a superb volley ruled out for a marginal offside against Rasmus Hojlund in the build-up, and Mikkel Damsgaard struck the post. The breakthrough came eight minutes after the restart, when a Damsgaard free-kick caused a mix-up in the Welsh defence and Davies turned the ball into his own net, his first own goal in 102 appearances for his country. Isaksen doubled the lead in the 66th minute with a deflected effort from another Damsgaard set-piece, the Brentford midfielder providing the delivery for both goals. Denmark's only negative was an injury to Manchester United's Patrick Dorgu , who was forced off after 30 minutes. Wales, who lost 1-0 to Portugal in their opener, have now failed to score in the first half of any of their six games in 2026, and face Norway and Erling Haaland next on Thursday.

Meerdink Double Gives Xavi First Win as Netherlands Coach, Gakpo Hurt

Xavi Hernandez earned his first win as Netherlands head coach as Mexx Meerdink scored twice in a 2-1 victory away to Serbia in Belgrade, lifting the Dutch to the top of Nations League Group A2, though the win was overshadowed by an ankle injury to Cody Gakpo . The 23-year-old AZ Alkmaar striker, making his first international start, opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after Crysencio Summerville was fouled by Aleksa Terzic. Serbia levelled through Luka Jovic in the 43rd minute, but Meerdink restored the lead in the 69th minute, converting a chance created by Ruben van Bommel, who has now set up a goal in each of his first two games for the Dutch. Meerdink had only been called up as a late replacement for the injured Justin Kluivert and Donyell Malen, and has now scored two goals in as many appearances. Gakpo, who had scored in the 1-1 draw with Germany on Xavi's debut, lasted only 17 minutes after a heavy tackle from Sasa Lukic, and was replaced by Van Bommel. "It's his ankle, that's all I know," Xavi said. "Tomorrow we will know, but hopefully it's not too important." Gakpo is reported to be undergoing scans on Monday, and the news will concern Liverpool, who are already without Alexander Isak, who returned early from Sweden duty with a minor injury. The Netherlands moved to four points, while Serbia remain bottom without a point. The Dutch next travel to face Greece on October 1.

Portugal Beat Norway 2-1 as Nyland Blunder Overshadows Haaland Goal

Portugal beat Norway 2-1 in Oslo to make it two wins from two in the Nations League, with Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos scoring either side of an Erling Haaland equaliser, while Cristiano Ronaldo stayed on the bench throughout. Felix gave Portugal the lead in the 17th minute, finishing a slick move involving Nuno Mendes and Pedro Neto with a disguised effort past goalkeeper Orjan Nyland . Norway dominated possession afterwards and levelled five minutes into the second half, when Haaland tapped in from close range after Patrick Berg headed on a Martin Odegaard free-kick, taking his international tally to 65 goals in 57 appearances. The equaliser lasted only three minutes. Nyland played a routine pass straight to Ramos, who chipped the stranded goalkeeper for his 12th international goal, and VAR later ruled out another Ramos effort from a similar Nyland error for offside. Head coach Jorge Jesus had left Ronaldo out of the starting lineup, only the second time he has not started for Portugal since the 2022 World Cup, and he did not come on. Portugal are now the only Group A4 side with six points, three clear of Norway and Denmark, and both the winner and runner-up of each League A group advance to the March 2027 quarter-finals.

England posted 355 for 7 after batting first, powered by Banton's 126 off 105 balls . Captain Harry Brook added 77 and Jordan Cox struck a rapid 76 off 52 balls, with the pair sharing a 150-run stand before Cox helped England add 104 in the final 10 overs. Dilhara Fernando was the pick of Sri Lanka's bowlers with 3 for 52. Chasing 356, Sri Lanka never recovered from an early collapse and were bowled out for just 132 in 29.1 overs. Kusal Mendis top-scored with 35, but wickets fell steadily as Liam Dawson (3-26) and Gus Atkinson (2-26) cleaned up the lower order. The result avenged Sri Lanka's 16-run win in the second ODI at Headingley and gave England the series 2-1, with Will Jacks named Player of the Series for his 147 runs and 9 wickets across the three matches.

India Crush West Indies by 8 Wickets as Kohli, Gill Hit Centuries in 1st ODI

India began the West Indies tour of India 2026 with a dominant 8-wicket win in the 1st ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, chasing down 296 with 50 balls to spare. Put in to bat after Shubman Gill won the toss, West Indies got off to a flying start. John Campbell (62) and Justin Greaves put on 135 for the first wicket, with Greaves going on to score a maiden ODI century, 101 off 108 balls. Kuldeep Yadav pulled things back for India, picking up a four-wicket haul (4/40) to peg West Indies back from a strong position. A brisk 58 not out off 43 balls from Amir Jangoo lifted the innings to 295 for 7 in the 50 overs, with Prasidh Krishna also chipping in with two wickets. In reply, India never let the required rate get away from them. Rohit Sharma and Gill added 74 for the first wicket before Rohit fell to Alzarri Joseph for 32. That brought Virat Kohli to the crease, and he and Gill put together a 151-run stand that took the game away from West Indies. Gill made 110 off 108 balls, his 10th ODI hundred, before falling to Roston Chase. Kohli was unstoppable at the other end, finishing unbeaten on 139 off just 88 balls with 10 fours and 9 sixes, the most sixes he has ever hit in an ODI innings. In the process, he became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000 ODI runs, doing so in 315 innings, 74 fewer than Tendulkar took. Ruturaj Gaikwad stayed unbeaten on 13 as India got home in 41.4 overs, finishing on 300 for 2. It was a statement opening performance for India across both departments. Kuldeep's four-for set the platform, and the Gill-Kohli partnership did the rest with minimal fuss. West Indies will need a much sharper effort with the ball and in the field if they are to level things up in the remaining matches of the series.

Anahat Singh Scripts History With Squash Singles Silver at 18

Anahat Singh became the first Indian woman to reach an Asian Games squash singles final, but had to settle for silver after a straight-games defeat to Malaysia's top seed Sivasangari Subramaniam at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena. The reigning champion from Hangzhou 2023 and world No. 5 dominated from the start, winning 11-4, 11-4, 11-7 in just 27 minutes, never allowing the 18-year-old Singh to settle into her rhythm. It capped a strong week for Singh, who beat Singapore's Wai Lynn Au Yeong in the round of 16, compatriot Tanvi Khanna in an all-Indian quarter-final, and produced a dramatic comeback win over Japan's Satomi Watanabe in the semi-final. The silver surpasses the bronze medals won by India's previous squash stalwarts Dipika Pallikal (2014, 2018) and Joshna Chinappa (2018), and comes on the same day India's Abhay Singh also won silver in the men's singles final.

Alexander Isak Returns to Liverpool Early With Minor Injury

Alexander Isak has left Sweden's Nations League camp early and returned to Liverpool for assessment after picking up a minor injury, despite scoring in a 2-1 win over Romania on Friday. The striker played the full 90 minutes and opened the scoring in Stockholm before the issue surfaced afterward. Sweden boss Graham Potter described it as "a small problem with his thigh," adding: "It's not a big one, but because of the amount of games we've got in a small space of time, he won't be able to make those." Isak will miss Sweden's remaining three fixtures in the window and will now be assessed by Liverpool's medical staff at the AXA Training Centre. He has scored five goals in eight matches for club and country this season, and Liverpool will be hopeful he recovers in time to face Manchester City at Anfield on October 11.

Eric Garcia was withdrawn from Spain's starting lineup just before kickoff against England, after picking up left knee discomfort in the warm-up at Wembley, with Marc Pubill coming in to replace him. Speaking after Spain's 3-2 win, head coach Luis de la Fuente played down the severity of the issue. "He's had a minor issue, it doesn't look serious. We'll assess whether he can recover once we get back to Madrid, but only if there is absolutely no risk to the player," he said. Garcia will undergo further evaluation with the Spanish medical staff before a decision is made on his involvement in the upcoming fixtures against Croatia and Czechia . De la Fuente indicated a replacement would be called up if Garcia is unable to recover in time.

Oyarzabal Completes Spain's Comeback Win Over England, Extends Unbeaten Run to 39

Spain came from 2-1 down to beat England 3-2 at Wembley in their Nations League opener, with substitute Mikel Oyarzabal completing the comeback and the world champions extending their unbeaten run to 39 matches, a record for a European nation. Lamine Yamal gave Spain a second-minute lead after Marc Guehi's error, only for England to hit back before half-time through Anthony Gordon and a Harry Kane effort that deflected in off Marc Cucurella. Kane then missed a golden chance to make it 3-1, striking a second-half penalty against the crossbar after Jude Bellingham was fouled by Rodri. Spain made England pay, with substitute Alex Baena curling in an equaliser on the hour before setting up Oyarzabal , who chipped goalkeeper James Trafford to complete the turnaround in the 74th minute. It was Oyarzabal's second decisive goal against England at a major tournament, having also scored the winner in the Euro 2024 final. The run surpasses Italy's previous European record of 37 games unbeaten between 2018 and 2021.

Virat Kohli Becomes Second Batter to 15,000 ODI Runs After Tendulkar

Virat Kohli became only the second batter in ODI history to reach 15,000 runs , after Sachin Tendulkar , during India's first ODI against West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Kohli reached the landmark in his 315th ODI innings , 74 innings faster than Tendulkar, who took 377 innings to get there in 2007. He brought up his half-century off 40 balls in the process, breaking his own tied record with Tendulkar for the most 50-plus scores by an Indian against non-Asian teams. He later reached three figures, his 54th ODI hundred, already well clear of Tendulkar's tally of 49. Tendulkar remains the format's all-time leading run-scorer with 18,426 runs from 463 matches, leaving Kohli 3,426 runs behind at the moment he crossed 15,000. Kohli's knock also helped set up a chase led by captain Shubman Gill , who struck his 10th ODI century as India chased down West Indies' target in Thiruvananthapuram.
