Brighton Beat Manchester City 1-0 at Etihad as Ayari Strikes, Giving Arsenal Chance to Go Top
Brighton & Hove Albion beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, October 31, in a Premier League Matchday 9 game. Yasin Ayari scored the only goal in the 10th minute. The result gave Brighton their first-ever away win against City, on their 18th attempt, and it left the top of the table wide open.
Brighton scored early on a quick counter-attack. A loose clearance fell in the box, and Ayari was first to react. He beat City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to put the visitors ahead. It was a perfect start for Fabian Hurzeler's side. It was also a reversal of what happened in midweek, when the two teams met in the League Cup. In that game, Brighton led twice at the Etihad but lost on penalties. This time they made the lead stand.
Brighton went in at half-time with the 1-0 lead. City came out with more energy after the break and put the visitors under heavy pressure. One chance in the 54th minute came very close to bringing them level. Brighton's goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was in great form and made a number of key saves. The Brighton back line also blocked many other efforts.
The defeat is City's second straight league loss. Their unbeaten run in the league had ended a week earlier at Aston Villa. City stay top of the table on 21 points, but they are now level on points with Arsenal and lead only on goal difference. Brighton moved up to third place on 19 points, two points behind the leaders.
That sets up a big chance for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta's side play Liverpool away on Sunday, November 1. If they avoid defeat, they will move to the top of the table. Brighton had already shown their title credentials this season by beating Arsenal in a convincing win earlier in the campaign. The top three are now separated by only two points.
For Brighton, it is a big result. The club has never won a major trophy, and a win at the home of the league leaders will bolster their hopes of a title challenge.
