Aston Villa Draw 1-1 With Fulham as Zion Suzuki Own Goal Cancels Out Nicolas Jackson Strike and McGinn Penalty Miss

Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham at Villa Park on Saturday, October 31, in a Premier League Matchday 9 game. Nicolas Jackson scored for Villa in the first half. Fulham then equalised in the 64th minute through an own goal by Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who dropped the ball over his own goal line. The draw stopped Villa from winning a third league game in a row.

Villa had a good chance to go ahead in the first half. They were awarded a penalty in the 16th minute, and captain John McGinn took it. His kick hit the woodwork and stayed out. It was a costly miss, as Villa had to wait another 23 minutes for their breakthrough.

Suzuki played a key role in keeping the game level. He made four saves in the match. The best of them came in the first half, when he kept out a close-range effort from Fulham's Oscar Bobb as the visitors broke quickly. Without that save, Villa might not have been ahead at the break.

The goal came in the 39th minute. Johan Manzambi set up Jackson, who made a lot of room for himself. He turned the Fulham defenders Castagne and Affengruber one way and the other, and then curled a right-footed shot into the bottom corner. It was Jackson's eighth goal in 10 games this season. Sky Sports called the defending awful, but Jackson took full advantage.

Villa had chances to extend the lead. After the break, Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno was alert to keep out a shot from Jackson early in the second half. At the other end, Suzuki got a hand to a ball flung across the box, which stopped Fulham's Garcia from getting a tap-in. Neither Shea Charles nor Garcia could get a shot on target from a Fulham corner.

Fulham got their equaliser from a mistake. In the 64th minute, Suzuki dropped the ball into his own net. He is the first Villa goalkeeper to score an own goal in the Premier League since Emiliano Martinez against Liverpool in May 2024. He is also the first Asian goalkeeper to score an own goal in the competition.

It was a disappointing afternoon for Unai Emery's side. They had gone into the game with a chance to win a third league game in a row. Fulham, with Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey in their team, showed good resilience to come away from Villa Park with a point.
