Glenn Phillips Scores Record 341 Runs in a Men's Bilateral T20I Series, Passing Phil Salt's 331
Glenn Phillips finished the five-match T20I series against India with 341 runs. That is the highest aggregate in a men's bilateral T20I series. The record came in the fifth and final match at Seddon Park, Hamilton, on Sunday, November 1. Phillips stayed not out on 65 off 38 balls. New Zealand chased down 192 in 18 overs and won by 7 wickets.
England's Phil Salt held the old record. He scored 331 against the West Indies in a five-match series in 2023. Mohammad Rizwan was next with 316 against England in 2022. Phillips walked into the final game on 276 runs. He passed Salt's mark in the 18th over, with two runs off Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
The series began with an unbeaten 82 off 40 balls in Christchurch. He followed that with 70 in the second match. He made 17 in the third match in Wellington. His biggest innings was 107 off 49 balls in the fourth T20I at Eden Park. It had 6 fours and 10 sixes. It also powered New Zealand to 259/7, their highest T20I total. His scores in order were 82*, 70, 17, 107 and 65*.
Phillips also made four scores of 50 or more in the series. Only Rizwan and Japan's S Ravichandran had done that before in a bilateral series. Ravichandran did it against Mongolia in 2024.
His numbers against India stretch beyond this series. Phillips has scored 522 T20I runs against India in 2026. That is the most by any batter against one opponent in a calendar year. Abhishek Sharma is next with 431 against New Zealand.
Phillips said he tried to be "a bit more of the hunter and a little less of the prey." He was named Player of the Series.
New Zealand still lost the series 3-2. India had won the first three matches. Tim Seifert hit 93 off 50 balls in the last game. He added 86 with Phillips for the third wicket. Adam Milne took 4 for 19 and was Player of the Match.
The tour now moves to five ODIs. The first is on Wednesday, November 4, at Eden Park in Auckland.
