Derby County Beat Bolton 3-1 With Second-Half Comeback to Ease Pressure on Manager John Eustace
Derby County came from behind to beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 at Pride Park on Friday, November 6, in Championship Round 15. A rapid-fire start to the second half turned the game around. The win eased the growing pressure on head coach John Eustace and was badly needed by the Rams before the international break.
For 45 minutes, Derby looked set for another defeat. Bolton had the first clear chance after 13 minutes, when Xavier Simons' shot from the edge of the box curled just over the crossbar. They made the breakthrough just before half-time. Ruben Rodrigues put the visitors ahead in the 42nd minute. The home crowd was restless, and questions about Eustace's future were growing after a run of poor results.
The second half was a different story. Derby came out with a lot of energy. Just 43 seconds into the half, defender Ryan Nyambe poked the ball in to make it 1-1. It was his first goal in professional football, in his 309th career appearance. It was an extraordinary moment for a player who had never scored before.
Derby were not finished. Two minutes later, in the 49th minute, Jack Robinson completed the turnaround. Nyambe switched the play to the far side, and a looped header from Morris dropped for Robinson in the box. He nodded the ball home to make it 2-1. It was Robinson's first goal for the club.
Bolton pushed hard to find an equaliser, and they came very close. Sam Dalby nodded towards goal from a few yards out, but Derby goalkeeper Zetterstrom reacted brilliantly. He got a strong arm to the ball and steered it away. It was one of the key moments of the game.
Derby sealed the win in stoppage time. In the fourth minute of added time, Rhian Brewster thumped in a late third goal to make it 3-1. It was a clinical finish that ended the contest and sent the home fans away happy.
Ahead of the game, Eustace had said that the club wanted to put pride back in the shirt. His team did that in the second half. Local reports said Derby had set a new standard with their second-half display, and the challenge now is to keep it going when the Championship returns after the international break.
