Borussia Monchengladbach Sack Eugen Polanski After Winless Start to Season

Borussia Monchengladbach have sacked head coach Eugen Polanski after a disastrous start to the Bundesliga season left the club bottom of the table without a single point from three matches.

The final straw came with a humiliating 5-0 defeat at SC Freiburg, following earlier losses to RB Leipzig (3-0) and newly promoted Elversberg (4-3) at home. Gladbach have scored just three goals while conceding twelve across their opening three fixtures. Assistant coach Tobias Trulsen was also relieved of his duties, with former Mainz coach Jan-Moritz Lichte taking interim charge ahead of next Saturday's Matchday 4 fixture against Mainz.

"Despite a good pre-season and positive signs, the team have not managed to achieve the desired results in the Bundesliga," said sporting director Rouven Schroder. "Recent performances led to the decision to relieve Eugen of his duties with immediate effect." Polanski, a boyhood product of the club's academy, had only been appointed permanently in November 2025 after initially taking interim charge when Gerardo Seoane was sacked last September, and had signed a contract through 2028. "Borussia Monchengladbach was and remains my club. That is why it hurts so immensely that things have turned out this way," Polanski said in a statement. The dismissal marks the first managerial change of the new Bundesliga season, mirroring the club's own timeline from a year earlier.
