Yamal made seven appearances at this World Cup and scored once, a strike against France in the semi-final that made him Spain's second-youngest ever World Cup scorer, behind only Pele's all-time record. He didn't register an assist all tournament, a quiet return for a player who set up four goals at Euro 2024 two years ago.

He came into the tournament managing fitness. A hamstring injury before the World Cup put his opening matches in the group stage in doubt, and he was eased back gradually as Spain progressed. Despite the slow start, Spain didn't need him to carry the attack. They won all eight of their matches and conceded just one goal in the entire tournament, a defensive record that made individual scoring numbers almost secondary.

This wasn't Yamal's first taste of major-tournament success. He became the youngest player ever to win a major international trophy when Spain won Euro 2024 the day after his 17th birthday. Now, still a teenager, he adds a World Cup winner's medal to that, becoming a two-time champion with Spain before he's played a single senior tournament where he was the headline scorer.
