Karetsas Scores Winner as Dortmund Beat Real Betis 2-1 in Champions League
Konstantinos Karetsas scored the winner as Borussia Dortmund beat Real Betis 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday. The goal came in the 72nd minute at the Signal Iduna Park. It was set up by Fabio Silva.
The first half ended goalless. Dortmund then took the lead four minutes after the restart. Fabio Silva scored in the 49th minute. Betis levelled in the 67th minute. Aitor Ruibal finished from a tight angle after a cross from Ezzalzouli.
Karetsas came off the bench and settled the game just five minutes later. He finished a chance created by Silva. Dortmund then held on through a nervy ending. Betis goalkeeper Valles made some good saves. Kobel also had to rush out to stop a close-range effort.
The goal made some history. Karetsas is 18 years and 350 days old. He is now the youngest Dortmund player to score a winner in the Champions League. He broke the record held by Jude Bellingham, who was 19 years and 98 days old. He is also the youngest Greek player to score in the competition.
It has been a memorable season for the teenager. He joined from Genk in August. He had a frightening moment in Dortmund's opening Champions League game in September. He was taken to hospital after feeling unwell on the pitch. He has now returned to score a decisive goal on the same stage.
Dortmund also lost Serhou Guirassy to an injury in the first half. He leads the team with four goals in the competition. The club has not given details yet. His absence gave Silva a start up front, and he made the most of it.
Dortmund moved to nine points. It is their first back-to-back win in the competition this season. Betis stay on nine points after four games.
The next two games are tough. Dortmund face Arsenal on November 24. They then play Inter on December 9. Coach Niko Kovac will hope Guirassy is fit.
