Gyaneshwari Yadav Wins Silver in Women's 53kg Weightlifting at CWG 2026
Gyaneshwari Yadav continued India's strong weightlifting run at the Commonwealth Games 2026, winning silver in the women's 53kg category in Glasgow. She lifted a personal-best total of 199kg, made up of 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk.
The 23-year-old from Bhondiya village in Chhattisgarh pushed Nigeria's Didih Onome Omolola all the way in a closely fought final. Yadav even set a new Commonwealth Games clean and jerk record with a 107kg lift, only for Didih to respond immediately. Didih eventually claimed gold with a 206kg total, rewriting both the Commonwealth and Games records. Canada's Rebeka Groulx took bronze with 178kg.
Yadav became the third Indian weightlifter to medal in Glasgow, following Mirabai Chanu's gold and Raja Muthupandi's silver. She trains at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala and has represented India at the Commonwealth Championships, Asian Championships, and World Weightlifting Championships.
The result marked India's fourth weightlifting medal and fifth overall at these Games, extending the country's strong tradition in the sport at the Commonwealth level.
