Enzo Fernandez made a surprise Manchester City debut from the start against Coventry City, promoted into the starting XI after Nico O'Reilly suffered a suspected lower back injury during the warm-up at the Etihad Stadium.

Fernandez, City's £125 million record signing from Chelsea, had initially been named among the substitutes just four days after completing his British record-equalling move. But O'Reilly's late fitness issue forced an immediate reshuffle, with the Argentine drafted into midfield alongside fellow deadline-day arrival Iliman Ndiaye, who also made his full debut having replaced Phil Foden in the only other change from City's 4-1 win at Crystal Palace.

O'Reilly had started both of City's opening two league matches and has been a key figure under Pep Guardiola since breaking through last season. His absence adds an unexpected complication for City just as they look to build early-season momentum with a revamped midfield following the departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva.
